How to use anchors or something similar? (if possible)

I have a big complex knot that I'm trying to simplify to create an animation of it - it all splits into separate unlinked components but it's very complex at the start. The dynamics panel doesn't do a great job, I have to fiddle massively with the various parameters (many of which I don't know what they're doing but they seem to help) and it is a long slow torturous process for the whole thing to come apart.

Is there some way I can anchor parts of the knot and then "compress" or shrink other parts? I want some kind of process like what "dbeads" seems to do, but preserving knot type. Or just anchor everything but one component, and then pull that component out from everything else, and then do the same for each other component.

There are several options on the Dyna panel that seem to imply some kind of anchoring is possible but I can't figure out how they work.

Any help or suggestions welcome!
